The Two Questions We're Asking

At Placeboes Research Foundation, our work is guided by two fundamental scientific questions: How do biological constraints give rise to consciousness? How can biopsychosocial contexts individualize evidence-based medicine? The first guides our investigation of consciousness and the possibility of understanding, predicting, and beneficially influencing conscious states. The second guides our investigation of how biological, psychological, and social contexts can inform increasingly contextualized and individualized healthcare. Constraints and Contexts of
Consciousness & Health

Constraints and emergent contexts are the central principles underlying our scientific programs. We investigate how biological constraints give rise to conscious experience, and how biological, psychological, and social contexts shape health and disease. These questions are pursued through two complementary frameworks: COBRA (Constraint-Based Bayesian Residue Approach), which investigates the biological constraints of consciousness, and CIBEM (Contextualization and Individualization of Evidence-Based Medicine), which investigates the contexts that shape health, disease, and healthcare. Together, these programs seek to advance the science of engineering tranquil conscious states and enable more predictive, individualized, equitable, and evidence-based healthcare.


Engineering Context-relevant Technologies

Our technology programs move from biological inspiration towards engineering principles. We explore how constraints can define the viable states of an artificial system, while context can shape how that system senses, interprets, decides, and acts. Across Cybernetic Systems, Viability-Conditioned Artificial Systems (VICAS), Context-Sensitive Innovations, and Novel Information Systems, we investigate these principles at different scales and across different applications. Rather than pursuing capability in isolation, we seek to develop technologies whose behavior remains responsive to context, bounded by viability, and relevant to the environments and communities in which they operate.


Six Guiding Worldview Commitments

Our worldview provides the intellectual foundation upon which our science is built and our technology is translated. Under COBRA, we articulate three commitments concerning consciousness, empirical inquiry, and the evaluation of competing theoretical frameworks. Under CIBEM, we articulate three commitments concerning healthcare networks, contextualized and individualized evidence-based medicine, and the rationale for the clinical specialties we investigate. Together, these six commitments guide how we frame questions, interpret evidence, develop technologies, and determine our long-term scientific direction.

COBRA and CIBEM operate within this evolving network, supported by shared frameworks for research, intellectual property, authorship, and equitable value creation. Together, these connections preserve individual and disciplinary identities while enabling collective capabilities that no participant could achieve alone.
