Imagine four individuals, each with their own gaps and possibilities. Now bring them together. Something new emerges between them—a “Plus” that belongs to none of them individually, but is made possible by all four acting together as a system—a network, where boundaries represent identities, not separation. Placeboes Research Foundation is such an evolving, dynamic and sustainable network, united by two fundamental scientific questions: How do biological constraints give rise to consciousness? How can biopsychosocial contexts individualize evidence-based medicine? Through collaborative research, technology and innovation, we aim to investigate these questions and translate the resulting insights into solutions for health and tranquil human experience.

Boundaries Are for Identity, Not Separation.

Our search for a pragmatic model of improving health and reducing the burden of disease led us to an unexpected conclusion. A clinician is expected to be a Clinician, Teacher, Healer, and Entrepreneur—four essential roles, each constrained by the same limited time and capacity. No individual can sustain all four roles alone, just as no single discipline can answer the questions that health and disease present. Progress therefore depends not on dissolving specialization, but on connecting specialized individuals, disciplines, institutions, and communities into functional networks. This insight led us to Sustainable Health Care Networks—a model in which boundaries preserve identity without creating separation. Boundaries are what allow distinct nodes to exist; connections are what allow them to function as a system.

Ontology-Bracketed Empirical Consciousness

Consciousness can be investigated as a biological phenomenon through empirical science. Through COBRA (Constraint-Based Bayesian Residue Approach), we investigate the biological constraints governing conscious states and their transitions. Our research spans seven interconnected programs integrating neuroscience, computational psychiatry, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and systems biology to establish a quantitative framework for consciousness. The knowledge generated aims to inform evidence-based interventions for disorders of consciousness, sleep disorders, psychiatric illnesses, and the induction and maintenance of tranquil states.


Contextualized & Individualized Health

The same disease can present very differently across individuals because health and disease unfold within distinct biological, psychological, and social contexts. The CIBEM (Contextualization and Individualization of Evidence-Based Medicine) Framework investigates how these contexts influence the experience, burden, consequences, and possibilities for care associated with a health condition. We seek to identify and measure these contextual differences and determine how they can be incorporated into evidence-based healthcare. Through this approach, CIBEM aims to move beyond one-size-fits-all models towards healthcare that is increasingly contextualized, individualized, and responsive to the circumstances of individuals and communities.


Context-Sensitive Innovations

Innovation achieves its greatest impact when it responds to context rather than assuming uniformity. We develop technologies and practical solutions that are sensitive to the biological, psychological, social, economic, and environmental contexts in which they are intended to operate. Particular attention is given to the constraints encountered across diverse populations, healthcare settings, communities, and emerging economies. Rather than pursuing universality by removing context, we seek to engineer technologies that remain scientifically rigorous while adapting to local realities. Through this approach, we aim to make innovation more accessible, sustainable, equitable, and contextually relevant.


Collaborative Networks for Equitable Health

The most complex challenges in health and consciousness cannot be addressed in isolation. Our Sustainable Health Care Network brings together clinicians, researchers, educators, technologists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and individuals with lived experience across disciplines, institutions, communities, and nations. Boundaries within this network represent identities, not separation. By bringing together diverse expertise, perspectives, capabilities, and resources, we seek to accelerate scientific discovery, technology development, knowledge translation, and capacity building. Through this evolving network, we aim to foster sustainable collaborations that translate scientific and technological advances into equitable, contextually relevant solutions for improving health and human experience.
