When you first looked at the image above, you probably saw scattered fragments. Moments later, you saw a cobra. The image never changed. Only your interpretation did. Guided by a few visual constraints, your brain constructed a meaningful percept from seemingly random blotches of ink. The COBRA (Constraint-Based Bayesian Residue Approach) Framework explores how biological constraints, shaped by metabolism, neural dynamics, learning, and cross-sensory integration, contribute to our sense of self, our perception of the world, and the dynamic relationship between them, three essential poles of conscious experience. We investigate how biological constraints vary across conscious states and shape experience with an aim of engineering beneficial conscious-state transitions that promote health and tranquility.

The COBRA Quadrant

At Placeboes, we intentionally bracket questions of ontology and investigate consciousness as a consequence of biological constraints. The COBRA Quadrant asks whether this extraordinary consequence, giving rise to our sense of self, sense of the environment, and the relationship between the two, can be mapped within a biological state space governed by the physiological dynamics of metabolic support and perturbational complexity. Its deeper purpose is to measure, test, and predict conscious-state transitions, opening the clinical possibility of deliberately influencing these transitions and the scientific possibility of engineering tranquil states.

The NOCS Program

The Normative Observatory of Conscious States (NOCS) seeks to establish normative data for the COBRA framework across wakefulness, sleep, and dreaming. By characterizing the biological constraints and physiological dynamics associated with these naturally occurring conscious states, NOCS aims to build reference maps of conscious state transitions within the COBRA Quadrant. These normative data provide the foundation against which other populations and states can be compared, including disease cohorts and meditation cohorts. Through these comparisons, NOCS seeks to identify how conscious states and their transitions differ from normative patterns and provide an empirical foundation for understanding, predicting, and ultimately influencing conscious state transitions.


The LODOS Program

The Longitudinal Observatory of Disorders of Sleep (LODOS) evaluates the COBRA framework across disorders of sleep by examining how biological constraints and conscious state transitions differ from normative patterns established through NOCS. By following these dynamics longitudinally across sleep disorders, LODOS seeks both to test and refine the COBRA framework in pathological states and to identify patterns associated with altered sleep and conscious experience. In turn, these insights may reveal new ways of understanding sleep disorders, identifying clinically meaningful transitions, and informing evidence-based approaches to predicting and potentially influencing transitions towards healthier sleep states.


The LODOC Program

The Longitudinal Observatory of Disorders of Consciousness (LODOC) evaluates the COBRA framework across disorders of consciousness by examining how biological constraints and conscious-state transitions differ from normative patterns established through NOCS. By following these dynamics longitudinally across coma, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, minimally conscious states, and recovery, LODOC seeks both to test and refine the COBRA framework and identify patterns associated with deterioration, stability, and recovery of consciousness. In turn, these insights may reveal new approaches to detecting covert consciousness, characterizing clinically meaningful transitions, improving prognostication, and informing evidence-based strategies for facilitating recovery of conscious states.


The LOCMAP Program

The Longitudinal Observatory of Cross-Modal Abstractions in Psychiatry (LOCMAP) investigates psychiatric disorders as evolving configurations of a shared, biologically constrained predictive-control architecture. Rather than treating diagnostic categories as isolated disease entities, LOCMAP follows how prediction errors, precision weighting, uncertainty, persistence, interoception, and higher-order abstractions of self, others, and the environment interact and change over time. By mapping these dynamics within the COBRA Quadrant, LOCMAP seeks to identify transdiagnostic configurations underlying psychiatric experience, test the framework longitudinally, and explore whether measurable shifts in these configurations can help predict clinical transitions and guide increasingly individualized interventions.

The BUPICA Program

The Biological Understanding of Pharmacologically Induced Conscious Alterations (BUPICA) uses pharmacological perturbation as an experimental window into the biological constraints of consciousness. Psychedelics, anaesthetics, sedatives, and other consciousness-altering agents provide an opportunity to deliberately perturb conscious states and observe how metabolic support, perturbational complexity, predictive control, and subjective experience change together. By mapping these induced transitions within the COBRA Quadrant, BUPICA seeks to experimentally test and refine the framework, identify mechanisms governing transitions between conscious states, and explore how these insights may inform predictable, controllable, and therapeutically beneficial modulation of conscious states.

The BUMICA Program

The Biological Underpinnings of Meditation-Induced Conscious Alterations (BUMICA) investigates the biological constraints underlying changes in conscious experience during meditation. By mapping meditation-induced transitions within the COBRA Quadrant, BUMICA examines how metabolic support, perturbational complexity, physiological dynamics, attention, perception, and the sense of self change across contemplative states and differ from normative patterns established through NOCS. Through longitudinal study of meditation cohorts, BUMICA seeks to test and refine the COBRA framework, characterize the biological conditions associated with tranquil states, and explore how these insights might ultimately inform evidence-based approaches to facilitating beneficial conscious-state transitions.

The OCIHEN Program

The Observatory of Consciousness in Holobiont and Ecological Networks (OCIHEN) investigates how biological and ecological interactions beyond the brain may constrain conscious states. It examines relationships among host physiology, microbial ecosystems, and environmental conditions across living, perimortem, and postmortem transitions. By mapping these changing biological and ecological configurations within the COBRA Quadrant, OCIHEN seeks to test and extend the framework beyond brain-centred accounts of consciousness. The program aims to identify how organism–environment relationships change across the boundaries of conscious life and explore what these transitions reveal about the biological conditions necessary for consciousness.
